The Challenge
Perle is a human-in-the-loop AI startup specializing in multi-modal data labeling to train and deliver high-quality data. But we’re not the only company helping to build AI models. The real challenge is: How do we set ourselves apart from other data labeling services?
The Solution
Listen to the user. Listening to the user may sound simple, but it’s often overlooked. In our product design team—made up of myself, another designer, and our product manager—we work closely to ensure the user’s voice drives every decision.

The Approach
✿ Product comparison I started at Perle as the first product designer as a result, all our tools were open source. I spent some time playing around with competitor companies to understand what worked for them and what didn’t.
✿ Building a scalable system After rounds of iterations, testing and feedback led us to our first MVP that consisted of image annotation only. After a positive response we began building onto of those building blocks to maintain consistency and a quick learning curve for users.
✿ Simplicity and Ease Building a responsive component library followed by design guidelines that reduced cognitive overload with one accent color and limited text made a daunting task intuitive.
